How to Become an NBA Agent in 2025: Exam, Requirements & Proven Prep
Becoming an NBA agent is exciting but the process can feel intimidating. Between the NBPA application, the CBA (Collective Bargaining Agreement), and the annual exam, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed or unsure where to start.
You may think memorizing in its entirety is the best place to start BUT that is completely false especially since its an OPEN BOOK EXAM.
This blog breaks it down step by step what the NBPA requires, what’s actually on the exam, and how to prepare so you give yourself the best chance to pass on your first try. Whether you’re a lawyer looking to pivot into representation or just starting your journey, YOU CAN PASS! Below is a clear path from “interested” to “certified,” plus a proven study plan (and resources) that help my students over the last 5 years pass on the first try.
Step 1: Understand the NBPA Certification Process
The NBPA (National Basketball Players Association) oversees the certification of all NBA player agents. Here’s the high-level process:
Apply during the window – The NBPA opens applications once a year. This years window is open right now and closes at midnight est time on November 7 2025.
You’ll submit your application
Pay the fee $2,000, $750.00 of which is non refundable and $1,250 is your pro-rated agent dues
Complete a background check.
Get approval to sit for the exam – Once approved, you’ll receive details about the exam date, location, and materials. No news is good news so don't freak out if you don't hear anything for awhile.
Take the exam – Beginning in 2025, the exam is back in person in New York City during the first two weeks of January.
Wait for results – Results typically arrive 4–8 weeks after the exam. Once you pass, you’ll receive your certificate and can begin representing players.
Education vs. experience. A four-year degree is required. The degree doesn't matter just that you have one. The NBPA may accept relevant negotiating experience in place of some or all of the formal education requirement, AT ITS DISCRETION.
Step 2: What’s Actually on the NBPA Agent Exam
The NBPA lists exactly which Articles and Exhibits of the CBA to study. The exam is open book but don’t let that fool you. You’ll still need to move quickly through 50 multiple-choice questions (about 3.5 minutes per question) covering topics like:
Free agency rules
Bird rights
Rookie scale and two-way contracts
Trades and simultaneous trade rules
Salary cap and luxury tax mechanics
Computations like escrow, trade bonus (“kicker”), stretch & set-off
Common Pitfall: Many first-timers spend too much time reading every single page of the CBA instead of focusing on the parts that historically show up on the exam. Prioritizing the right sections is key.
Step 3: Build a Smart Study Plan
Passing on your first try isn’t about cramming it’s about studying strategically:
Start with the basics: Learn how the cap works, how free agency and Bird rights operate.
Drill the high-yield topics: Exceptions, trades, computations, free agency and how the salary cap works
Organization: The exam is open book, but you still only get 90 minutes. Having a well-organized binder and knowing exactly where everything is will be key. The test is in person again you don't want to be that person flipping through two massive binders and still not finding the answer!
Take a full mock exam: Simulating the test environment helps you manage timing and identify weak spots before the real thing.
Step 4: Use Resources That Actually Work
NBPA & Sports Business Classroom (SBC) Resources
As part of your NBPA registration fee, you gain access to Sports Business Classroom’s on-demand CBA courses and seasonal webinars. These are an excellent way to build a strong foundation, learn the language of the CBA, and get up to speed on league rules at your own pace.
Where Applicants Still Struggle
Even with great foundational content, most first-time test-takers still face challenges when it comes to exam execution — building a functional binder, finding answers quickly under time pressure, practicing with test-style questions, and getting feedback on tricky topics.
That’s exactly where my resources come in.
Study Guide + Binder Organization
This guide highlights the exact Articles and Exhibits of the CBA you should study, along with the specific topics within those sections that are most likely to appear on the exam.
The Binder Organization section walks you through multiple ways to set up and index your binder, based on methods that past test-takers have found most effective for staying calm and efficient during an open-book, timed test. Grab a copy here

How It All Fits Together
Think of NBPA + SBC as your starting point — they provide the official foundation. My resources are the next layer, helping you operationalize that knowledge through binder setup, timed practice, and exam-day strategy.
And because my sessions are live and interactive, you’re not just passively watching videos you have the chance to ask questions, get feedback, and hear how other applicants are thinking about the same challenges.
That personal interaction, accountability, and real-time coaching are what move people from “I studied” to “I passed.”
